Mood Disturbance/Dysregulation

A common presentation for adults is mood dysregulation. I see individuals who are concerned they might have bipolar disorders or personality disorders.

Symptoms may include:

  1. Long episodes of depressed or elevated mood
  2. Quick intense fluctuations
  3. Big emotional changes in response to small triggers
  4. Relationship disturbances
  5. Anger
  6. Self-harm

The formulation will bring understanding as to why these variations are occurring (using a biological-psychological-social framework.

The treatment plan may include:

  • Therapy to promote self-acceptance and regulation
  • Therapy to process past trauma and reduce hyperarousal
  • Relational therapy to stabilise and enhance important relationships
  • Medication to ‘mood stabilise’
