Mood Disturbance/Dysregulation
A common presentation for adults is mood dysregulation. I see individuals who are concerned they might have bipolar disorders or personality disorders.
Symptoms may include:
- Long episodes of depressed or elevated mood
- Quick intense fluctuations
- Big emotional changes in response to small triggers
- Relationship disturbances
- Anger
- Self-harm
The formulation will bring understanding as to why these variations are occurring (using a biological-psychological-social framework.
The treatment plan may include:
- Therapy to promote self-acceptance and regulation
- Therapy to process past trauma and reduce hyperarousal
- Relational therapy to stabilise and enhance important relationships
- Medication to ‘mood stabilise’
