Mood and Behavioural Disturbance
Young people and parents often consult me due to concerns about mood variations. In young children this is typically aggression or ‘meltdowns’. Adolescence always brings emotional intensity , but for some this can bring such intense variations that young people start to self-harm or find their self esteem and relationships disrupted.
Symptoms include:
- Unpredicatable ‘mood swings’
- Aggression
- Self-harm
- Risk-taking
- Becoming vulnerable to exploitation
- Frequent ‘falling out’ with peers.
- Hearing voices
Treatment includes:
- Therapy- focussing on acceptance, understanding and empathy (age appropriate) Behavioural techniques
- Medication
- Family Therapy
- Liaison with other agencies and school
