I am ADOS and ADI-R trained (Autism assessment methods). As a psychiatrist I can make a clinical diagnosis of autism, however the ‘gold standard’ is multi disciplinary assessment- involving relevant professionals such as occupational therapists or speech and language therapists.
I always advise starting with general assessment and taking a pragmatic and step-wise approach to further diagnostic work, keeping the focus on addressing the problems (i.e. anxiety) rather than just on diagnosis. If a multi-disciplinary assessment is needed, this can be arranged.
